Druids Heath Golf Club was opened on 1st April 1974. It was created by a partnership between local businessman and sportsman Jim Ashwell and landowners Edgar Swain and his son Les. In the late 1960’s Jim Ashwell was looking for suitable land on which to build a golf course of his own design.
He eventually found Nuttall’s Farm in Hobs Hole Lane, Aldridge. The land itself covered vast deposits of sand and gravel making it well drained and perfectly suited to the construction of a course that would remain playable during the winter months. Outline planning permission was approved in 1969 for a change of use from agriculture to leisure. The original planned site for the clubhouse in Hobs Hole Lane was rejected on the grounds of poor access both for services and vehicles. This proved a blessing in disguise and the present clubhouse off Stonnall road gives wonderful views over the countryside as well as providing much more room for car parking.
The departure of Jim Ashwell for a new business venture in Portugal followed by the death of Edgar Swain in 1985 caused the remaining partner, Les Swain to consider selling the club. He kept his promise of allowing the Members ‘first refusal’ and consequently the members purchased Druids Heath Golf Club in 1987.
Strong leadership by an elected Development/Management Committee and the appointment of a new greens keeper, in 1988 saw the course improve dramatically. Tree planting, improved irrigation and watering systems, the construction of new tees, rebuilt greens and bunkers have enhanced the playing experience for members and visitors.
Development of the clubhouse in the early 1990’s extended the pro’s shop, the club’s lounge and dining areas as well as adding improved office facilities and a snooker room.
